How Jeff Bezos decided the first thing Amazon would sell was books (ZH)

Summary: From the start, Amazon aimed to be an “everything store”. After considering 20 or so options, Bezos decided on books due to the following reasons:

– customers would always know what they were buying
– there were two primary book distributors
– the competition couldn’t stock the 3 million books in print
– books offered great diversity

Amazon diversified by its acquisition of the companies Junglee Corp. and Planet All.
