The creator of ‘Fortnite’ is leading a battle that could throw the entire video game industry into disarray, and it’s likely to be terrible for Google and Apple

Summary: Fortnite is, by significant figures, the most succesful game of the year. Epic Games, the start-up that developed Fortnite, skipped Google Play and offered Fornite directly to Android Users. This action made a statement against the standart business model in which app stores take 30% of the revenue. Epic Games has also launched its own game store, offering developers 90% of their revenues, pressuring Steam, the most popular PC-game store, to change its revenue split as well.

Steam has been criticized for being a monopoly, locking developers into whatever revenue split it offers. Steam has recently given up regulation over the type of games released on their platform, which has raised the question “Why should developers accept that the major stores — including Apple’s and Google’s — take a 30% cut, when it doesn’t always seem like those same stores have developers’ best interests at heart?”

With the developments in technology, Google and Microsoft are both working on cloud-based gaming services in which the video is streamed to your device rather than your device having to render the game using its own hardware.

The future could as well be similar to this: pay 100$ dolars for the console and 10$ a month for the games themselves.
